2008 The National Year of Reading
What better way
to start the year and this second National Year of Reading than to dive into a
good children's book. 'Reading at the top of everyone's
agenda'
The government
and the Secretary of State, Dept for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) are
right behind the need to get more books to children. They are committed to
bringing books and literacy to families and making it easier for reading to be a
real pleasure for everyone.
At Leyton
Stories we are passionate about passing on the message that reading is
fun...
Children should have time to enjoy and get lost in books. Too much emphasis has been given to reading of 'texts' , often in isolation and the 'whole story' idea is too often lost.
The National
Literacy Trust and The Reading Agency have combined to lead organisations
committed to promoting reading. There are lots of activities about to happen and
the National Year of Reading 2008 will act as a springboard for the focus of
families reading together.
Director of the
National Literacy Trust, Jonathan Douglas comments:
“When we read we live different lives, see
different perspectives and develop empathy. Reading enables people to fulfill
their learning, social and economic potential.”
